*sigh*
Right now, I'm listening to an instrumental song that I ripped off a mix CD created by an unknown entity. I do not have artist or title information, but I LOVE THIS SONG.
For any other song I'd just google the lyrics, but I don't know how to figure out who made this and where I can find more. Can anyone help?
EDIT: OH YES!
The song ends with a sample of some dude over a phone...I googled a few words from that and found one blog that listed the song and had transcribed the sample at the end. The song is called "Pico" and is by Ratatat. Now I go off to look up Ratatat. :)

I didn't want to have to do this...
This journal is now Friends-only. I'm sick of checking my profile and finding that people that I don't know at all have added me. It's common courtesy to at least say hello when you add someone. I'm not interesting enough to stalk, I promise.
No fancy graphic...just the slow, methodical, manual locking of past posts.

oh Politics...
Yesterday was Michigan's Primary...sort of. With no Democratic delegates and only 4 candidates on the ballot, Michigan's role for the Democratic side was simply to get some results in the media. This made me slightly hopeful. One of the candidates left on the ballot was Dennis Kucinich. He's also the only Democratic candidate that campaigned in Michigan, and I went to see him twice. I like him a lot, and think him quite capable. He's educated, but not uppity, and has good ideas and plans for pretty much everything. Really, it's almost like taking the best bits from each of the 3 leading candidates (Clinton, Obama, and Edwards) and leaving all the crud behind. That crud happens to include money though, and so Kucinich is not able to campaign as much. He's also not exactly a media favorite, being anti-big corporation and all.
The end result of this is me talking to friends about politics and getting a blank stare when I mention Dennis Kucinich. "Who?" they ask. "Never heard of him." But people who know of him generally like him. I had the hope that people would use their vote to pick Kucinich since the vote is essentially wasted anyhow, there's no fear of causing a split. I tried my best to spread the word, and voted for him along with about 20k other people in this state.
Since the results make it pretty clear that I'm probably going to have to choose someone else to like, I went over to a friend's to watch the debates in Nevada (where Kucinich was invited, then un-invited, then court-ordered to be allowed, then not there anyway). I had been moderately excited about each of the major 3 at different points, but now it's all just kinda blah. I still don't trust Clinton, I'm off and on with Obama, and Edwards is quickly becoming a parody of himself with the whole "son of a mill worker" line among other tired phrases. In all though, it just blows me away to look at how much money they've raised and spent. I can think of a lot of ways to spend 100 million dollars that would be far more productive than this stupid game. Unfortunately, Kucinich's only fighting chance was to do the same.

Green living, a little at a time.
A friend recently asked me how I could bear “people like her” regarding my efforts to live a green lifestyle in contrast to that of most Americans. My response was that I just had to believe that people would do what they could. So right now, I'm at the Midwest Fish and Wildlife conference where conference organizers made a massive effort to make the conference itself green. There were simple things that everyone should be doing, like printing conference programs on recycled paper. But then there were bigger things. The conference is being held at a LEED Silver certified building, to start, but the best parts for me are that they hosted a “swag swap” instead of giving all participants a stupid gift bag full of crap, and they convinced the facility to use local food if possible. They succeeded in a big way with the local food effort, managing to reach 90% despite this being December in Wisconsin.
There are things that go far beyond being impractical for me, so I do not do them. But there are lots of things that I can (and do) do. I also know that there are other things I could probably do if I thought of them. So this post is meant as a way to share ideas. I want to know one favorite green thing that YOU do, no matter how small. It could be anything, really...do you wipe your hands on your pants? Buy eggs from local farmers?
The requirements: Make it something that you do because it makes life better for you in some way, rather that just forcing yourself to do it because it's green. Tell us why you started doing it, and why you continue to do it. Take a look at what others write, and see if it's something you already do and hadn't realized was green, or if it's something you could easily do.
( I'll start. )

Away for a bit...
Just so everyone knows, my laptop was stolen Friday night. I'll have to use the computing facilities on campus until I find a replacement, so I likely won't be around as much. Email me if there are crucial things I need to know, k?

For the locals and those who want to travel -
On October 19, there will be a fiber swap party. This means you bring the stuff from your stash -- yarn, fabric, other crafty stuff ok too -- that you have been meaning to use but probably won't, and come trade for other stuff that you want/need. partial skeins can be used to whip up some hats to give to charity, or we can laugh at them and wonder why we ever used even half a skein of something so ugly.
The location is in Ann Arbor, but please email me to find out where. It's good to have a list of folks just in case something changes.

oh cruel fate...
I just found out that not only is Crowded House on tour for the first time in AGES, but they played in Ann Arbor on August 14th, which was 7 days before I got back.
I might be the only American my age who can sing along with the majority of their songs, and I missed this. So not cool.

I got an email from STA travel with a bunch of sale fares. Under the Europe heading, they had a link for a tour that said "A slice of Turkey."
mmm...dark meat.

Banned Books
ganked from meowgurlgv
Beneath the cut is a list of the top 110 banned books. Bold the ones you've read. Italicize the ones you've read part of. Underline the ones you specifically want to read (at least some of). How do we indicate the ones we wish we hadn't read? I'll change it to red... Green means I own the book, and blue means I've seen the movie :)
I can't believe how many of these are movies...

IKEA in Canton
Ok, so I'm a little geeked that the new IKEA is opening in Canton on Wednesday. I just read a blurb about the grand opening on their website though. They are allowing people to start lining up in front of the door (with camping gear, etc.) starting tomorrow. WTF?

Trim!
I finally dragged myself in to get a trim today. The first place I went said there was a $20 minimum for women, even though I didn't want the wash or style, so I walked out. I tried this place right next to my bus stop and it was a delightful experience. The lady said she could just squirt me down and trim an inch off for $10. I didn't even have to say not to wash it. She also gushed over my hair (which is about to the bottom of my ribs) which is always nice :)
So if anyone else here is in the Ann Arbor area, Michael's salon on Plymouth and Murfin is great.
